IMG_0607.JPGThe K800 is a 3.2-megapixel Cybershot phone that has a Best Picture feature which takes 9 pictures in a second—four pictures before you press the button, one main picture, and four pictures after you click. You then pick out the “best” picture in this mess and save that one. Interesting.

What the People Who Used to Live in My House Apparently Said to Each Other Before Selling It to Me

Liftmatic I think of my oven mostly as that unused space under the burners where I store excess pots and pans and occasionally chuck in a frozen pizza. The liftMatic Oven from Siemens, however, is an entirely different sort of oven. It's mounted on the wall at eye level, and the food is entered and removed from the oven by lowering the glass ceramic oven floor rather than opening the oven door. This helps the oven to retain heat, making it incredibly useful as a cooker. However, the fact that you can easily see into it without making the special effort to bend down means it would not be terribly good for storing all my pans.

On the plus side, it's self-cleaning, energy-saving, and claims to heat up so quickly it can cook a frozen pizza in ten minutes. Ah, Siemens, you do know the way to a gal's heart.-[Star C. Foster]

Using Liquid Crystals to Guide Stem Cells
Posted by samzenpus on Wednesday, 08 March 2006 17:08:00
from the biotech dept.
An anonymous reader writes "Liquid crystals, the same phase-shifting materials used to display information on cell phones, monitors and other electronic equipment, can also be used to control the differentiation of embryonic stem cells, Wisconsin researchers say. By using the crystals to mechanically strain the cells, they can prevent the indiscriminate (and unwanted) differentiation common in embryonic stem cell research and therapy. So when you want a bone cell, say, you don't end up with one from the kidney."

chaosmage42 writes "Scientists at the University of Dublin have found a way to break down styrofoam, the bane of recyclers/composters everywhere. This could be a great step towards sustainability, but it does require the styrofoam to be heated first."

Gold Buying - Time Saver or Cheating?
Posted by Zonk on Monday, 06 March 2006 08:35:00
from the rpg dept.
Sunday's online version of The Wichita Eagle has a piece on buying gold in a MMOG. The author of the piece examines what's involved, and ponders whether such an action is cheating, or just a shortcut. From the article: "Getting my gold was a snap. The smallest quantity for sale by IGE was 500 pieces for $60, about twice what I wanted to spend. I decided to go for it, however, as I simply could not abide the prospect of skinning even one more level-10 boar. Within 20 minutes, the gold appeared in my WoW character's mailbox." From a Cathode Tan post. What is your opinion: Cheating or Shortcut?

We've seen our fair share of Mac mini mods, and NES hacks precede the dawn of time, but seeing the two devices join together in one glorious hack really warms our hearts. Brent Housen's buddy managed to get the whole Mac inside a NES case, and added a DVD writer via an IDE to USB adapter. All the back ports of the mini are available, he made sure the front buttons of the NES were functional, and he's even planning on enabling the controller plugs for use with emulators. Pretty hardcore stuff, we're still trying figure out this whole "soldering" thing.
