in which i miss being 6

in which i miss being 6

i’m so not getting this whole spaghetti god thing. i know it’s supposed to be witty and such, but it’s really going right over my head. clearly the london times is in on the joke. am i dim? have i lost my sense of humor? or is this simply as dumb as i think it is? the only part of it that makes me giggle is the word “pastafarian.” however, i’d take a pastafarian to be a fellow carb addict.

what’s more to my confusement, there’s a comment below the image liked above that says “hehe, all your religions are belong to pastafarian.” i know this is a parody of a quote. and i’ve heard many parodies of said quote. i haven’t a clue what quote this is or where it’s from and again, i’m left feeling quite out of the loop.

phooey

sodoku (the hamster version)
stopped in b&n saturday to price the muppet show - season one ($39.99 @ barnes & noble) and my eye was caught by this book ( official sodoku puzzle book: the utterly addictive number-placing game. there was a grind on the front with numbers in it so all the buzzers in my brain went off.

one of the problems with me is that words like “hot new”, “trendy”, “popular” and “addictive” trigger the firewalls in my ego, popping up “warning!” and “this action cannot be undone!” dialog boxes. so my first instinct is to shun this new fad and condemn it without investigation. but it’s got numbers on a grid and deals with words – a deadly combo.

the bigger problem is this: i’m terribly drawn to this new bit of mystery, but who’s got the time for this nonsense? learning a new word/puzzle game? oh man. i can hardly keep the dishes clean. maybe someone will get immersed in it and tell me all about it.

i gotta call andy.

wrt: the muppet show - season one
after saturday’s stellar festivities, andy and i had just enough energy to pop the dvd in and curl up in bed. man do i love the muppet show. you know how when you go back to the house you grew up during, say 8-12 years old? and everything’s smaller and not as fantastic as you remembered? i was born in 1974 but we didn’t have a tee vee until i was 8 (74+8=1982) so the muppet show is a bit older than my tee vee viewing. in short, we really could have used a good pot buzz before we slid that disk in. of course the writing is great and the snarky jokes are awesome (yes, i love waldorf and steadler), but some things, were just bizarre. granted, it was the 70s. just another instance where i really missed that 8 year-old brain.

…which brings me to my next bit…

friday was a work party – president’s birthday. all the guys where there with their respective lady-friends/wives and one of them brought his offspring. keegan is the boy’s name. he’s two. andy was enchanted by this creature and i later dubbed him “monkeydog” as that’s really what he seemed like to me. andy watched as monkeydog bonded with an antique toy truck (with a duck driver, i might add) and went through many problem-solving trials in an effort to get the smaller toys into the bed of the truck and haul them about the back lawn.

“oh my god. i think he just discovered ‘black.’” andy hushed to me excitedly. and thus began our discussion on learning, the development of neural pathways and wrinkles in the brain. i could go on for hours on this, but suffice it to say, we both agree that the loss/silencing of one’s inner 5 year old is a terrible thing indeed.

andy had earlier (in the week) asked me “how did you ‘play barbies?’” all i could share was how you dress them up, pretend you’re going to work/clubbing/out to dinner with g.i. joe or to the summer house in the closet and how when i’d recently sat down with some barbies and a full barbie kitchen, i was at a loss over what to do with them. further, i was extremely frustrated that my now adult fingers couldn’t manipulate the tiny drawers, snaps and cups as gracefully as i remembered.

i used to favor photoshop, but now that i’ve learned illustrator so well, i really only use photoshop for cropping, resizing, coloring and, well, photo editing. however…

if i had to, i’d choose legos over barbies any day of the week. it’s true now just as it was in 1980. and to design my own kit? ho man! how rad!
